When to use it

Worked example

A report imports amounts such as $1,240.50 as text in column B, and column C contains quantities. The formula should multiply the cleaned amount by the quantity.

The formula removes currency symbols and commas from B2, converts the remaining text to a number, and multiplies by C2. The fallback is limited to the conversion path so the row can be reviewed instead of silently trusted.

Check before you paste

  • Convert only the cells that should be numeric or date values instead of wrapping the whole formula in IFERROR first.
  • Remove currency symbols, commas, extra spaces, and labels before VALUE tries to parse imported numbers.
  • Check whether dates are real date values or text strings before comparing or subtracting them.
  • Test the repaired formula on one known row before filling it through a shared sheet.
