Worked example

A cell contains comma-space separated tags, but the formula uses only a comma delimiter and leaves leading spaces in the split values.

=TRIM(TEXTSPLIT(A2,", "))

The formula splits on the exact comma-space delimiter and trims each returned value. If the source sometimes uses semicolons, line breaks, or inconsistent spaces, handle those delimiter cases deliberately before filling the formula down.

Check before you paste

  • Match the delimiter exactly, including spaces after commas, line breaks, tabs, and semicolons.
  • Use the column delimiter argument for results across columns and the row delimiter argument for results down rows.
  • Clear the spill range or move the formula outside an Excel table before changing valid TEXTSPLIT logic.
  • Set pad_with deliberately when uneven row-and-column splits should not show #N/A.
  • Check Excel version support when TEXTSPLIT appears as #NAME? or _xlfn.TEXTSPLIT.
