When to use it

Use this page when Google Sheets returns #DIV/0!, says a function parameter cannot divide by zero, or shows divide-by-zero errors in ratios, percentages, averages, margins, or score formulas. It is strongest when you can paste the exact formula and one row where the denominator should be valid.

Do not wrap the whole formula in IFERROR before checking the denominator. IFERROR can be right for a finished report, but it can also hide unrelated reference, value, lookup, or parse problems that should stay visible while you repair the formula.

Worked example

A report calculates conversion rate from signups in B and visits in C. Rows with no visits yet should stay blank, but rows with visits should calculate normally.

=IF(C2=0,,B2/C2)

The formula checks the denominator directly, returns a blank only when visits are zero, and performs the division when the denominator is available. Other formula errors remain visible instead of being hidden by a broad IFERROR wrapper.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether the divisor is a true zero, a blank cell, text, or another formula returning an empty-looking value.
  • Decide whether a zero denominator should return blank, 0, #N/A, or a clear message before adding a fallback.
  • Use IF to test the denominator directly when only division-by-zero should be handled.
  • Use IFERROR carefully because it can also hide #VALUE!, #REF!, #N/A, parse errors, or other formula problems.
  • Test the repaired formula on one valid denominator and one zero or blank denominator before filling it through a shared sheet.
