When to use it

Worked example
A total can look wrong when Excel follows normal operator precedence and multiplies before it adds.
=(A2+B2)*C2The parentheses force Excel to add A2 and B2 first, then multiply the subtotal by C2. Without the parentheses, Excel evaluates the multiplication first, which can produce a different result while still returning a normal-looking number.
Check before you paste
- Check whether parentheses are needed to force Excel to calculate in the intended order.
- Confirm every referenced cell or range points at the intended row and column after copying.
- Compare stored types when values look the same but some are text and others are numbers or dates.
- Use exact-match lookup settings unless approximate matching is intentional and the lookup column is prepared for it.
