Worked example

A SUMIF formula should total West-region amounts, but column D came from a CSV import and the amounts are stored as text.

=SUMPRODUCT((B:B="West")*IFERROR(VALUE(D:D),0))

The formula checks the same West criterion while coercing imported text amounts into numbers. IFERROR is limited to the conversion step so non-numeric imported cells do not break the sum.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether your sheet expects commas or semicolons between function arguments before changing the formula logic.
  • Confirm numbers, dates, and lookup IDs are stored as the type the formula expects.
  • Replace broken references with the intended current ranges before wrapping the formula in IFERROR.
  • Use IFNA or IFERROR only after deciding whether the error is acceptable to hide.
  • Test the repaired formula on one known row before filling it through a shared sheet.
