Use case

Excel INDIRECT fixer for spreadsheet work.

Help Excel users repair one INDIRECT formula where the visible problem is usually invalid reference text, unquoted sheet names, renamed tabs, closed source workbooks, named-range scope, data-validation dependent dropdowns, or Excel for the web limitations.

What this page gives you

  • A focused repair pass for one INDIRECT formula returning #REF!, a wrong cell, or a broken dropdown reference.
  • Checks for valid reference text, tab-name quoting, named-range scope, closed source workbooks, and Excel for the web limitations.
  • A revised INDIRECT path you can test against the resolved reference before changing a shared workbook or data-validation rule.

When to use it

Use this page when INDIRECT is close but brittle: it returns #REF!, points at the wrong tab or cell, fails inside a dependent dropdown, or behaves differently after a workbook, sheet name, named range, or browser-hosted file changes. Paste the formula and the text value it is trying to turn into a reference.

Do not use it for a whole-workbook reference audit or as proof every linked workbook is healthy. INDIRECT depends on the exact text it receives, source workbook state, and Excel environment, so test the repaired formula on one known reference first.

Worked example

A summary sheet stores a tab name in A1, and the formula should pull B2 from that tab. The tab is named Q1 Sales, so the sheet name needs apostrophe wrapping inside the reference text.

=INDIRECT("'"&A1&"'!B2")

The formula builds a reference like 'Q1 Sales'!B2 before INDIRECT evaluates it. Without the apostrophes, sheet names with spaces can turn into invalid reference text and return #REF!.

Check before you paste

  • Confirm the text inside INDIRECT evaluates to a valid A1 or R1C1 reference.
  • Wrap sheet names in apostrophes when tab names contain spaces, punctuation, or apostrophes.
  • Open any external source workbook before treating an INDIRECT #REF! as a syntax-only problem.
  • Check whether the name is scoped to one sheet or to the whole workbook.
  • Avoid relying on external INDIRECT references in Excel for the web when the desktop workbook behavior cannot be reproduced there.
