When to use it

Use this page when Google Sheets shows "Circular dependency detected," returns #REF! with a circular-reference warning, or suggests iterative calculation after a formula edit. It is strongest when you can paste the formula, name the formula cell, and describe the intended source range.

Do not turn on iterative calculation just to silence the warning. Iteration can be valid for deliberate models, but accidental circular dependencies should usually be fixed by moving the formula, narrowing the range, or splitting the logic into helper cells.

Worked example

A total formula lives in D2, but it accidentally totals D2:D20, so the result cell is inside the range being summed.

=SUM(D3:D20)

The repaired formula starts below D2, which keeps the total cell out of its own source range. If D2 should summarize rows below it, the range should begin at the first data row, not the formula cell.

Check before you paste

  • Remove the formula cell from any range it is summing, filtering, or otherwise calculating.
  • Trace helper cells that feed each other until you find the reference that points back to the formula result.
  • Use iterative calculation only when the circular model is intentional and you understand the max-iteration setting.
  • Test the repaired formula in one cell before filling it through a shared sheet.
