When to use it

Use this page when Excel shows the formula itself in the worksheet cell instead of the calculated result. It is strongest when you can say whether the whole sheet is showing formulas or only one pasted/imported formula cell is affected.

Do not rewrite a valid formula before checking display mode and cell format. Show Formulas mode and Text number format can make a good formula look broken, and the fix may be to change the setting or re-enter the cell rather than change the function.

Worked example

A total cell shows =SUM(B2:B20) in the grid instead of the total after the cell was formatted as Text.

=SUM(B2:B20)

Change the cell format to General, edit the formula, and press Enter so Excel treats it as a formula again. If every formula on the sheet is visible, turn off Show Formulas before changing the formula text.

Check before you paste

  • Turn off Show Formulas if the whole worksheet is displaying formulas instead of results.
  • Change text-formatted formula cells to General before re-entering the formula.
  • Remove any leading apostrophe or space before the equals sign.
  • After changing the format, edit and re-enter the formula so Excel recalculates it.
