When to use it

Use this page when Excel says there is a problem with the formula before it calculates anything. It is strongest when you can paste the exact rejected formula and say whether it came from another locale, Google Sheets, a tutorial, or an AI answer.

Do not use it as a full-file review. A parse message usually means Excel cannot read one formula entry, so repair the syntax first and then test the result separately for #VALUE!, #N/A, #REF!, or wrong-answer issues.

Worked example

A copied IF formula can be rejected when the formula uses the wrong list separator for the Excel locale or includes smart quotes copied from a formatted page.

=IF(A2="Open",SUM(B2:D2),"")

The formula starts with an equal sign, uses straight quotes around the text value, and separates arguments with commas. If your Excel expects semicolons, change the separators before changing the IF logic.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether your Excel locale expects commas or semicolons between function arguments.
  • Replace curly quotes and copied smart apostrophes with plain straight quotes before changing the formula logic.
  • Count opening and closing parentheses around nested IF, SUMIFS, FILTER, LET, and LAMBDA sections.
  • Start the formula with an equal sign unless you intentionally want Excel to store it as text.
  • Test the repaired formula in one blank cell before replacing a formula in a live report.
