When to use it

Worked example

A product lookup can work in the first row but break after filling down if the lookup table range moves with each copied formula.

The lookup value A2 stays relative so it changes to A3, A4, and later rows. The product lookup and return ranges stay locked so the filled formulas keep searching the same table.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether automatic workbook calculation is enabled before rewriting a formula that copied but did not recalculate.
  • Confirm which references should stay relative and which should be locked with dollar signs.
  • Use Ctrl+D or the Fill command when the fill handle is hidden or hard to drag accurately.
