Use case

Excel formula not copying down fixer for spreadsheet work.

Help Excel users fix one formula that will not copy, fill, or update correctly down a column, especially when the blocker is hidden fill-handle settings, manual calculation, drifting references, missing dollar signs, table fill behavior, or a formula copied from the wrong starting row.

What this page gives you

  • A focused fix pass for one formula that will not copy, fill, or update correctly down a column.
  • Checks for fill handle visibility, Ctrl+D behavior, automatic calculation, relative references, absolute references, and locked lookup ranges.
  • A revised formula path you can test on the first filled row and a later row before changing the whole column.

When to use it

Use this page when dragging the fill handle, using Fill Down, or pressing Ctrl+D does not produce the row-by-row formula you expected. It is strongest when you can paste the first-row formula, the formula or result after filling, and the ranges that should stay fixed.

Do not assume every copied formula should change the same way. Some references need to move with each row, while lookup tables, criteria ranges, and constants often need dollar signs so they stay anchored.

Worked example

A product lookup can work in the first row but break after filling down if the lookup table range moves with each copied formula.

=XLOOKUP(A2,Products!$A$2:$A$500,Products!$C$2:$C$500,"Not found")

The lookup value A2 stays relative so it changes to A3, A4, and later rows. The product lookup and return ranges stay locked so the filled formulas keep searching the same table.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether automatic workbook calculation is enabled before rewriting a formula that copied but did not recalculate.
  • Confirm which references should stay relative and which should be locked with dollar signs.
  • Use Ctrl+D or the Fill command when the fill handle is hidden or hard to drag accurately.
  • Test the repaired formula on the first filled row and one later row before replacing the whole column.
