Worked example

An OFFSET formula can return #REF! when a negative row argument pushes the reference above the first worksheet row.

=OFFSET(A1,-2,0,1,1)

The row shift asks Excel to move two rows above A1, which is outside the sheet. A repair path starts by anchoring the formula to a valid starting cell or changing the row-offset logic before the result is used in SUM, COUNTA, or a named range.

Check before you paste

  • Check whether the row or column offset moves above row 1, left of column A, or past the worksheet edge.
  • Confirm the reference argument is a real cell or adjacent range, not text that needs a different reference strategy.
  • Make height and width positive numbers and decide whether omitted size arguments should inherit the starting reference size.
  • Test COUNTA, MATCH, or other helper calculations separately when they control OFFSET height or width.
  • Consider replacing volatile OFFSET with INDEX when the formula is stable but recalculation is making the workbook hard to trust.
